Tong Eng Brothers originated from China in the Hui Ann District of Fujian. The business began by trading of electrolytic tin plates which are used in bottle caps. The company expanded its operations in Singapore and became the leading stockist of electrolytic tin plates in Singapore.

Nevertheless, in the 1950s, because it saw the potential in the growth of Singapore in the 1950s, the company chose to diversify into real estate in Singapore.
